OCTOBER
(Spring)
 

  • Start of the summer season
  • Shallow trolling and harling starting to improve
  • Bay of Plenty and lower Hawkes Bay rivers such as Tukituki fish well as trout chase whitebait
  • Prime month for trophy marine fishing for snapper, giant bass (to 80 kg) and kingfish.
  • Scuba diving for crayfish excellent.

NOVEMBER
(Early summer)
 

  • Peak of harling / shallow trolling
  • Spring river fishing in full swing.
  • Trout actively feeding as rivers warm.
  • Lake shore fly fishing for cruising fish at Waikaremoana and Tutira. Small streams still holding fish. Rotorua International Fishing Competition (Book Early) Bay of Plenty marine waters start to warm bringing marlin and tuna species into play. Scuba diving enjoys best visibility.

DECEMBER
(Summer)
 

  • Upper reaches of Waiteti and Ngongotaha Streams opens
  • Lake begins to stratify with deep trolling more successful as a consequence.
  • Small streams still holding spawning trout.
  • Stalking and sight fishing becomes productive.
  • Big game fishing starts to fire for black, striped and blue marlin and several large tuna species in the Bay of Plenty.

JANUARY
(Summer)

  • Stream mouth fishing improves for Rotorua tributaries as lake begins to warm.
  • Jigging deeper water becoming more successful, especially on Tarawera.
  • Smaller shallower lakes such as Rerewhakaaitu come into their own.
  • Small spring creek stalking and fishing to sighted fish comes into its own.
  • Dry fly fishing becomes productive.
  • Big game fishing and line fishing very good.

FEBRUARY
(Summer)

  • Peak month for river fishing, fish are in good condition and prolific natural fly activity.
  • Ruakituri and Rangitaiki a good choice.
  • Head water rivers also at their best.
  • Heat promotes day time activity.
  • Exciting sport to dry fly Ngaruroro, Mohaka and Waiau.
  • Dry fly fishing at its best in the Bay of Plenty.
  • Deep trolling with lead and wire favoured on lakes, especially during the day.
  • Lake Rotorua stream mouth’s peak.
  • Small spring creek stalking at its prime.
  • Big game fishing and line fishing at its peak.

MARCH
(Summer)
 

  • Brown trout moving into rivers from lakes.
  • Good fishing stream mouths and lower reaches after dark.
  • Jigging particularly successful on Rotoiti.
  • Dry fly continues to be good on all rivers and shallow lakes.

APRIL
(Late summer)
 

  • Winter shoreline fishing starts on lakes for trophy rainbows.
  • Upper reaches Hawkes Bay Rivers close April 30.
  • Nymph fishing on rivers begins to be more productive.
  • Brown trout fishing in lake tributaries.

MAY
(Autumn / Fall)

  • Tagged Fish Competition Lakes Rotorua.
  • Lake tributaries fish well, especially Rotorua, Waikaremoana streams and Horomanga River.
  • Spring creek rainbow spawning runs begin with great sight fishing opportunities.
  • Lakes destratifying shallow trolling more successful.
  • Tarawera Outlet closes May 31.
  • The lower and mid reaches of some Hawkes Bay rivers are closed for the month of May.

JUNE
(Winter)

  • Peak of winter shoreline fishing for trophy rainbows.
  • Lakes Tarawera, Okataina and Rotoiti close for boat fishing June 30.
  • A number of rivers close until June 30 for spawning.
  • Upper reaches of Eastern rivers close June 30.
  • Broadbill swordfish appear off the Bay of Plenty coast - regarded as the ultimate game fish.

JULY
(Winter)

  • Winter shoreline fishing continues to produce trophy rainbows but starting to slow.
  • Shallow fringes of Lake Rotorua start to fish well for cruising browns and rainbows.
  • Lower reaches of Rotorua streams fish well.
  • Lake Tutira fishes well.
  • Deepwater marine species start to appear with giant bass, hapuka and bluenose actively targeted.

AUGUST
(Winter)

  • Whitebait runs begin to show in lower reaches of the Bay of Plenty rivers.
  • Lake McLaren offers good shallow sight fishing opportunities.
  • Lake Rotorua and smaller lakes shallow trolling.
  • Lake Tutira fishes well.

SEPTEMBER
(Spring)

  • Lake Rotorua and smaller lakes shallow trolling.
  • Larger Bay of Plenty rivers remaining open continue to fish well to the nymph.
  • Lake edge fishing good.
  • Lake Tutira fishes well.
  • Prepare for new season and opening of closed spawning waters!
